The client
Deane Apparel is New Zealand's largest marketer of uniforms, corporate wardrobes and work wear. It has factories in Auckland and Christchurch
Deane Apparel wanted to be able to promote their existing employees so they could better utilise those employees' knowledge of the business. They believe this is preferable to recruiting externally, often a slow and expensive process.
Deane has implemented an up-skilling programme to develop employees existing skills, enabling them to move into positions of greater responsibility.
Jacob Yandall [Supply Administrator] completed a Level 3 National Certificate in First Line Management (FLM), an in-house programme run by Workbase. The range of unit standards chosen was selected to meet the goals of Deane Apparel's Up-skilling Programme.
Programme content
Jacob's programme included in-depth exploration and development of:
- Oral and written communication skills
- Feedback and Interviewing skills
- Quality management skills
- Quality Investigation skills
- Problem Solving skills
- Team Building skills.
Great results
Jacob's manager saw significant improvements following the FLM programme. These included:
- developing a problem solving model he could use in the workplace
- using a range of analytical tools to successfully define and resolve quality issues
- utilising different leadership styles to develop and manage teams
- writing a number of well researched reports on issues affecting Deane Apparel
- communicating more effectively, through both oral presentations and written reports
