NZEqITO

The client

The NZ Equine Industry Training Organisation (NZEqITO) facilitates training for people employed in the equine industry. The ITO works with the industry and providers to develop training options, unit standards and national qualifications that best serve the needs of the industry.

The challenge

NZEqITO has supported a number of industry trainers to gain the National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (Vocational) (NCALNE). Trainers have been using the Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment tool with trainees. However NZEqITO noticed that tutors were finding it difficult to:

  • interpret the results of the assessments
  • make the link between the results and their training programmes
  • integrate what they had learned from NCALNE with the assessments and learning resources.

The solution

NZEqITO asked Workbase to run a two day workshop that helped NZEqITO tutors get a good understanding of how to interpret assessment results. The workshop also covered how tutors could use the assessment results to change their training programme to better meet the needs of trainees.  NZEqITO materials were used as the basis of the workshop to make the content more meaningful and to give participants activities that they could use immediately with trainees.

The results

There was very positive feedback from the tutors who participated in the workshop - regardless of whether they had completed NCALNE or not.

Those who had completed NCALNE felt the workshop brought the Assessment Tool fully into context and gave them a much greater understanding of how the theory and the practical aspects of literacy assessment and industry training come together.

For others, the workshop gave clarity to the purpose of the Tool and how tutors can work with their trainees for maximum impact.

The ITO felt that the workshop had given everyone a much better understanding of the relevant and practical application of literacy and numeracy for equine trainees. The ITO believed that this understanding will be invaluable in the training room and for ensuring better completions.

The sessions were well designed, giving a good mix of review, theory and the practical.
